The Law of Relativity
Nothing has meaning to us in itself. We give meaning to each thing in our lives,
and that meaning stems from our perception of the situation. An extremely rare
first edition of an early author may be highly prized by a collector. He may
travel the world or spend hours in tracking it down. But to an illiterate person
who places no value on books, it is just paper and ink; maybe a bit of fuel to
keep the fire burning a little longer.
We place value upon objects and people based upon our personal preferences and
upon our past experience. I am reminded of an incident with a deceased
housemate. An old (antique) pie cabinet was left in the basement by family
members of years gone by. His niece had requested to have it. When she didn't
come for it within three years, he became obsessed with getting it out. One day
he just chopped it up and put it into the trash. This piece would have brought a
substantial sum in an eager market. To him it was junk cluttering his space.
Knowing the numbers of our own chart provides insight into what is inherently
important to us. An antique dealer who has numbers that value the past and gives
a fine eye for detail will see great success in evaluating and finding quality
pieces that are readily salable for a good price. Someone without this number
support, who gets into the business because others are making a lot of money in
it, will likely overlook the rare find and waste money on fakes and poor
specimens. Support in the numbers gives the passion to take the extra care.
Are you passionate about your business? If not, you may be trying to succeed
against the odds. You may be able to create a going business, but you will soon
burn out from the effort. If you find yourself in this position, take a look at
the numbers of your chart. Even if you have spent years and thousands of dollars
following an inappropriate path, you will be better off to make the necessary
change. You will gain quicker success than you would have by continuing the
struggle.
In this information age, through the technology of the internet and modern
communication devices we are bombarded with ideas. A good copywriter will write
a convincing advertisement that persuades you to purchase this next piece to the
puzzle of your success. Oftentimes, that money is wasted. The particular item
may not fit into your immediate business plan. You are not yet ready to
instigate a new step or it does not lead you to your goals.
What may be vital for someone else may be useless to you. No matter how good the
product or how many doors a contact can open for you, if the benefit does not
suit your goals, it is a distraction that will take you off course. When I
practiced law, a common admonition was that your success depends more upon the
clients you do not take than upon the clients you serve. If you overload your
business with irrelevant programs and manuals you will not have time to
accomplish your true desire.
When you have a clear picture of your natural inclinations from the numbers and
have created a plan based upon your chart, you have a guideline for evaluating
every offering for relevance. No matter how exciting the offer, if it is not
relevant to your overall plan, reject it.
Ultimately, you must determine what is relevant for you. Learn from your mentors
or your coaches. Keep up with the research in your field. Don't be left behind
in technology, but be sure that each change or addition fits within your plan
and furthers your goals.
