Habits are your Friends

The force of habit can be a wonderful time boost, particularly with my 4 life path. Those activities that we do by habit cause us to move forward without much thought. You have heard the adage that if you want something done to ask a busy man. The truth behind this saying is that a busy person tends to habitually take action. If you have a regular morning routine, you get up, brush your teeth, shower and shave. You don't first determine whether you feel like taking care of the grooming. You just do it no matter if are you still half asleep, because you know that by the time you finish you will be more perky.

When the routine is broken, the following morning you may decide to first get a cup of coffee or to read the paper. On subsequent mornings, you find it easier to wait on the grooming routine. After a few days you have changed your routine, and it is difficult to get back to the original pattern.

This process continues throughout your day, both in personal and business activities. The precise routine that you establish determines the flow of your days and the accomplishments that you chalk up. Without an habitual routine, you can easily waste most of the day deciding what to do next.

My daily routine starts with the bathroom personal care, followed by brewing the coffee (30 minutes). I then set up the Daily Numeroscopes (about 30 minutes). I then enjoy the coffee while I peruse the new e-mails (sometimes as much as an hour.)

Unless the pattern is interrupted, this is my starting schedule 7 days a week. Of course. a certain degree of flexibility must be allowed for unexpected interruptions, such as a visit from a friend or neighbor or a scheduled reading or numerous telephone calls. With these interruptions, I find it fairly easy to get back into the original routine.

Each week contains scheduled calendar items. These activities need to be placed into the routine. Each Monday evening we attend a spiritual growth group meeting. Each Tuesday night I teach a University of Masters class. Each Thursday evening I take out the trash.

Now after completing this regular pattern, I then have the day before me to choose how to fill it. The activities outside the routine are the cause for concern. I need to fit more of the schedule into the routine. Instead, I think about what I will do. Too often, there is a long list of choices. Without the activity being in the routine, I am likely to go with what I feel like doing, or doing nothing at all.

If I am in the habit of listening to a meditation tape following the e-mails every day, I am apt to listen every day. If it is not in the pattern, I will allow myself to put off the listening for an item that seems to be more urgent. The day ends and I missed that hour of renewal for something of lesser value. It becomes easier the next day to let it slide. Before long that activity is gone from my thinking.

The secret is to determine in advance what should be included. Since I do a considerable amount of writing, I need to put a block of writing time into the pattern. Other items that should, perhaps become habitual are working with the mechanics of the computer, maintaining the web site, and home maintenance.

I have found that I accomplish more with a set routine, because then what I do is not determined by how I feel. It has to be done. Of course, others expecting or relying upon your results encourages forward movement. If you were not waiting for the Daily Numeroscopes, there are days when it would be easy to let them ride. But because of my commitment to get them out in a timely manner each day, they get done.

The nature of the activities that you include in your routine may vary with the energies that are strong in your chart, but even with the chaotic nature of a 5 life path, some routine seems to be desirable.
