Choosing Among Qualified Candidates for Promotion or Hiring
In any business that has employees (Sorry, this article may not be useful to you
who are a one-person home based enterprise.) one of the most difficult decisions
arises when filling a position. How do you decide which one, from two or more
qualified candidates, to put into that slot. The choice often turns upon very
minor considerations. One had a bigger smile, one had a tie that you liked, one
reminded you of your favorite Uncle Joe.
Without a more solid evaluation, you may feel that you could not go wrong with
any of the choices. As you flip a coin, you wonder in the back of your mind how
you will tell the loser. If you can point to the numbers and show why one was a
better fit, you can appear to be less arbitrary.
So how do you make that evaluation?
First, you run the numbers of your business from the founding date and the
business name. This chart will tell you what your business needs from an
employee.
Second, determine the qualities necessary to do the job. When you set the job
qualifications you pinpoint the type of individual that would be effective. You
would not put an introverted person who is obsessed with details into a selling
position for a cruise line, nor would you hire an accountant who is satisfied
with a lick and a promise.
Third, sort out the candidates by your parameters. In an interview or from the
resumes you will quickly sift out those who definitely are not a match. This
sorting will probably leave you with several in whom you are still interested.
Now the fun begins

important position that involves a costly training program, you may benefit from
a workup on all the candidates from a professional numerologist.
Sometimes just running the numbers will give you a clear cut choice that stands
out above the others. At other times you will have two or more candidates who
still seem to be equal. A more in depth look at the numbers can be helpful. Or
you may decide that now is the time to flip the coin.
